Antimicrobial resistance, or AMR, threatens a century of progress in human medicine.
WHO 18 Nov 2025

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Antimicrobial Resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. The World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and increase understanding of AMR and to promote global action to tackle the emergence and spread of drug-resistant pathogens. As one of WHOโ€™s official health campaigns, WAAW is mandated by the World Health Assembly and is commemorated annually from 18 to 24 November.

European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) 2025.
ECDCย 4 Dec 2025

European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) provides a platform to support for national campaigns on the prudent use of antibiotics. Each year, EAAD, which is coordinated by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), is marked across Europe by national campaigns on or around 18 November. EAAD is a European health initiative, acknowledging the growing problem with antimicrobial resistance, and recognising the need to raise awareness on the prudent use of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine in order to curb antibiotic resistance. As a result of collaboration with the World Health Organizationโ€™s Regional Office for Europe and other European and international partners, what started out as a small initiative in 2008, providing a platform for national campaigns in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA), has grown over the years to become an important event which is marked in more than 43 countries.
